GUKPT Coventry 9th Oct 2011 - 16th Oct 2011

As the G Cov, one of my local casinos is hosting the next leg of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) I am going to give the event my best shot. I have £300 in GUKPT vouchers that I've won via the G Coventry over the last 3 or 4 months so I can use those for side events or satellites.

Though I can definitely play some side events I'd really like to play the £1,000 main event. I've never bought in directly to a £1,000 event and don't intend starting now. However I have got several options to "win" a seat.

First off they have a £30 re-buy Super Satellite (SS) on Sunday 9th Oct. This is probably the option I like the sound of least as it's pretty easy to murder £150 in cold blood (or hot tilt) and still not have a seat.

Secondly they have on Wednesday 12th Oct a £150 Freezeout SS with a seat for every 7 runners. Again I don't like the thought of spending £150 and not getting a seat but they do have on every normal Thursday between now and when it starts a £5 re-buy Step 1 satellite to win a seat into this £150 SS. These Step 1's have 5 x £150 seats guaranteed.

That I feel is good value.

I went last night to try and though I felt confident after winning 3 Goliath seats via this method I actually finished in joint 7th when 3 of us got KO'd in the same hand! I shall try a few more Thursdays though and may get a seat.

The reason for my reluctance to buy in direct to a £150 satellite is where do you draw the line? I'd rather just play the £150 PLO side event. If you try and fail to win a seat via satellites there comes a point where you'd be better off just paying the £1,070 and buying in direct!

I've played £50 re-buy SS's before and watched people murder £500 and not make the 1st break. It's just insane and the guy would have been better off just paying the "bag of sand" in the 1st place.

On Thursday 13th Oct they have a £50 SS where you can only have a maximum of 1 re-buy or add on. It has 7.5k starting stack and a decent clock so that looks a good bet to me.

I have one other option for winning a seat and it is a little complicated to explain but I could actually win a seat for FREE so it's worth trying.

Any player that makes a Final Table in one of the G Cov's normal tournaments throughout the week  (not the £5 re-buy) gets a ticket to play the "Invitation Only" early evening comp on Saturday.

The player who wins this and the player in 2nd go forward to the "Invitation Only Final". 10k chips in final for the winner and 5k for 2nd. Due to the number of weeks left for this to run the maximum number of players that can possibly make the Invitation Final is 12 (that's if no one wins 2 seats). Those players will play winner takes all for a £1000 seat.

If you win 2 seats or more for the Invitation Final you can have a maximum of 25k chips in the final.

A bit complicated but if you play regularly at the G Cov anyway it makes sense. They have always run the invitation only comps every Saturday though usually it's for £150's worth of GUKPT vouchers. 1st £75, 2nd £50, 3rd £25. To be honest I've never bothered with this tournament and even though I qualified for it loads of times I've only ever played it once.

I have decided to make a concerted effort to try and win the £1000 seat. This means I will go to the G Cov on nights when I don't normally ( I usually just go on Fridays) to make sure I'm in the Saturday Invitation only event each of the 5 remaining Saturdays. With this in mind I went last Sunday and made the FT so I shall be there tomorrow.

I don't often go to a casino on a Saturday night as for a long time now I've been playing in a private home game with friends. I will have to give it a miss though for the next few weeks.
