I decided to play the Broadway Casino's "SUPER SATELLITE" for the D4 European Deepstack Championship £500 buy in event.
Though with Zero guaranteed seats and an awful structure there was F'all super about it. When it got down to about 30 players the chip av was 10bb's.
As it was a £50 re-buy with double chips for the add on everyone (me included) spent at least £100. So with a structure like that I was annoyed with myself for being so stupid for playing it. To spend £100 to win a seat for a £500 event is daft IMO. For a £1,000 comp then yes I think it's worth a punt.
I could have sat on one of the cash tables (There were 4 or 5 which looked very juicy) with £100 and had more chance of winning £500.
Alternatively I could have played roulette and put £125 on black and let the £250 ride if it won. So 2 successful flips and I'd have won a seat. As it was you needed to win about 10 flips in the comp to get a seat.
See they say roulette is just degenerate gambling but in reality it makes more sense than poker sometimes!
What clouded my judgement was that the main event itself has a great structure, 1 hour clock and 50k starting stacks so I'd really would have liked to play it.
I wish I'd run a BAP (Asked for backers) on Stake a Shark. (http://www.stakeashark.com/) I've used the site before and know quite a few of the regulars there so I could have raised half the money easily.
I've done it before, though to be honest I don't like it as it does make me play differently. The last time I did it I swore I'd never do it again as I played a hand really badly and mainly it was because I was too timid and if I'd not have been backed in the event I definitely would have raised and taken the pot down.
Sometimes I may do something that looks a bit crazy but if it's 100% my money then that's up to me. I tend to play far more conservatively when I'm staked and that can work against you.
Anyway off to the G Cov tonight to try and satellite into the £150 super satellite (1x £1k seat per 7 players) via the £5 re-buy. So I have a reasonable chance of winning a £1000 GUKPT main event seat for £25. Now that's good value.
Post Script: Update 16th Sept.
I did go to the G Cov last night for the £5 re-buy. It had 5 seats guaranteed and 12 players turned up! I got a seat without a re-buy, though I did have the £10 quadruple chip add-on at the break. It was fun though I hated my seat draw.
I got seat 8 as I was late and 7 were seated when I arrived. Then 2 of the best players Joe and Baz were seated in 9, & 10 as they came just after me. I knew I'd have to be careful opening pots light.
It then got much worse when a complete novice busted from seat 1 and did not re-buy. The seat was filled by "Mr Khan" a player who can strike fear into any poker players heart. He has never yet peeped at his hole cards and found 2 he doesn't like the look of. One thing you can be pretty sure of with Mr Khan is either you are going to bust him or he is going to bust you.
He personally busted 5 of the 12 players from the event then managed with only 6 players left to murder his entire stack and bubble a seat!!!!!!!!!! Just an astonishing performance, but he is a very nice guy and great fun to be on the table with. I think the G Coventry should give him a free seat into the £1k main event as he would have some of those top pro's in tears. People would pay good money to watch him play them.
On the bubble he was by this time to my immediate left and I just flatted pre-flop with several hands that were automatic raising cards 6 handed, but I knew he was always calling so I just tried to see flops cheap against him and hit something big. It worked a couple of times and I picked up some small pot's and was CL after 10 minutes of bubble play. I then just tightened up even more and waited for Mr Khan to do his thing.
He then lost a huge pot and was left with just 500 chips. The very next hand (blinds 300/600) he was BB and I was SB. The 1st 2 players folded and the button flatted with a knowing look. I made up the blind.
It got checked all the way down and the button took Mr Khan out with pocket Queens. When you consider that with 8 players left he had over 50% of the chips in play Mr Khan certainly made it entertaining.
Anyway the main thing is, I have now qualified for the £150 Freeze-out Super Sat (Wed 12th Oct) where 1/7 players get a £1,050 GUKPT main event seat. By the time the GUKPT starts about 30 local players will have qualified via these £5 re-buys. That means there is a good chance 1 or 2 of us will get a ME seat, I just hope I'm one of them!
